Requirements for Marriage in North Carolina
Ages – All persons of 18 years and older may lawfully marry. In addition, persons at least 16 years of age and under 18 years of age may marry, provided they have written consent of parent(s) having custody and a certified birth certificate. A Notary Public or the Register of Deeds must sign the consent forms.
Identification – Both a Drivers License AND a Social Security card is required from the bride and groom.
Waiting Period – There is no waiting period before or after obtaining the marriage license, and the license is valid for 60 days. The license must be purchased in the County in which you are to be married.
Divorce – Divorced applicants must bring a copy of their divorce decree, if the divorce has been finalized within the last 30 days. If one has been divorced for more than thirty days, one must simply provide the month and the year that the divorce had been finalized.
Obtaining a Marriage License – Both bride and groom must appear in person with the identification mentioned above to purchase their marriage license. The cost of the marriage license is $50. The Orange County Register of Deeds is opened from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, for marriage licenses. Marriage licenses will not be issued after 4:30pm. Please allow yourself plenty of time.
To make sure you get all of the benefits that you are entitled to receive, notify Social Security if you change your name. Call 1-800-772-1213. To get a new social security card, you will need 2 pieces of identification, one with your old name and one with your new one.
