Chamber Commentary:
Mark Chilton, an attorney and real estate professional, is running
for his third term as mayor, and while he has been supportive of Chamber
priorities during his first two, he has not been an open advocate
even for the economic development goals the town for some time has
espoused. The economic pressures on the town, which has the highest
property tax rate and lowest percentage of commercial tax base among
Orange municipalities, makes us hopeful that he’ll be more active
on these issues if reelected. He provided leadership on the effort
to redevelop 300 E. Main and on Carolina North and says now that the
town should just rezone commercial a portion of the annexed Northern
Area, which could prove ripe for commercial development if the town
took the initiative. "We should zone it commercial – not
mixed use – and let the market decide. We should do it now."
