when asked at the forum held on October 7:
Chamber Commentary:
Mark Kleinschmidt, an attorney, has been an extraordinary advocate
for the causes in which he believes during his eight years on town
council. And he would be an experienced hand in guiding the ship of
council in the wake of the departure of Kevin Foy and Bill Strom,
filling what he called a void in experienced leadership. And while
he is by no stretch out of touch with the needs of the business community
– just the opposite – it is unlikely he would be the champion
of those needs as mayor. Kleinschmidt said that he realized he would
have to take a different leadership approach to being mayor than being
a councilman. He said that developers would have to continue to do
more and talk with neighbors more than they would in other places
to get projects built in Chapel Hill, but that their projects would
benefit and be better from the experience. "We’re not a
plug-and-play community."
