when asked at the forum held on October 7:
Chamber Commentary:
James Merritt, a retired school administrator who was appointed last
year to fulfill the term of the late Bill Thorpe, has taken to his
council seat slowly and has not, so far, effectively conveyed his
goals or provided much substance to his service. Diversity on council
is an important Chamber value, and for that reason his campaign is
compelling. He did voice a strong regard for more stringent panhandling
rules and for improved lighting and safety around public parking decks.
But his low key campaign and style make it difficult to ascertain
how much of an advocate for the business community he could be or
how effectively he could make his point among the other eight voices
on council.
