August 23, 2006 — Chapel Hill Wine Company to Hold Corks for Kids Wine Dinner and Tasting Extravaganza to benefit the NC Children's Hospital on September 21 and 22.
On February 26, 2002 Todd and Amy Wielar's life would change dramatically. Yes, they were having a baby and that changes lives everyday, but what makes their story so different is how their new daughter, Lily Mae, came into this world. During delivery, Amy had severe complications that required emergency surgery. Lily Mae was delivered and immediately transported to Intensive Care while the doctors went about trying to save Amy's life. After a long night with both of his girls in Intensive Care, Todd was finally the proud father of a healthy, redheaded daughter and the proud husband of his strong (and alive) wife. The staff at North Carolina Children's Hospital had saved both Amy and Lily Mae's lives. Amy also works at the Children's Hospital, so she and Todd are reminded everyday of the amazing things the folks at the Children's Hospital do and how they touch so many lives. Kids come from all over the state come to North Carolina Children's Hospital to receive the best healthcare around - regardless of their ability to pay or the complexity of the care that is needed.
As a result of their experience, Todd, owner of Chapel Hill Wine Company, has dedicated his time and resources to supporting the hospital. Lately, his energy has been directed towards planning Corks for Kids - a two-day dinner and wine tasting event featuring nine Australian winemakers and owners designed to raise money for North Carolina Children's Hospital.
Dinners will start at 6:30 p.m. at seven locations around the Triangle on Thursday, September 21st. The dinners range in price from $65 to $125 per person. The main wine tasting event will be held at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill on Friday, September 22nd starting at 7 p.m. The tasting will feature 65 wines, 53 of Australian origin and the other 12 French. Of the 65 wines, 20 have a rating of 90 points or higher according to the Wine Advocate, International Wine Cellar, and Wine Spectator.
There will be a silent and live auction of collectible wines and other goodies as well. Wines featured at both days of the event will be available for purchase. All proceeds from the event and sales of the wines will go to the North Carolina Children's Hospital.
