In Orange County, the 2025 election includes the mayors and governing boards of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, as well as the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education.

Election Timeline
  • Friday, October 3: Absentee Voting by Mail begins
  • Thursday, October 14: Voter registration deadline (5 p.m.)
  • Thursday, October 16: Early voting begins
  • Saturday, November 1: Early voting ends
  • Tuesday, November 4: Election Day (6:30am-7:30pm)

When and How

Visit the NC State Board of Elections for quick search engines to find your polling place (Election Day Polling Place Search). There are three ways to vote in North Carolina:

  1. Vote by mail: No special circumstance needed, but you must request a ballot before the October 31 deadline
  2. Vote in-person during early voting: October 16 - November 1, with multiple voting site options and same-day voter registration
  3. Vote in-person on Election Day: Tuesday, November 4, 2025

About The Chamber's Election Engagement  

Candidate Surveys: The Chamber will survey Chapel Hill and Carrboro candidates on relevant business- issues. Expect to see survey responses published on this webpage and in local media by mid/late September.

Coffee with Candidates Event: The Chamber will host its annual Coffee with Candidates event in early October. This "speed dating" format breakfast event gives Chamber members an opportunity to interact in a small group environment with candidates for elected office in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough, and CHCCS. Stay tuned for event date and registration.

Important Voting Information

Photo ID Required: Photo ID will be required when voting in North Carolina. Registered voters who do not have an acceptable form of identification can get a free photo ID from the Orange County Board of Elections office at 208 S Cameron Street in Hillsborough (open Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm).

Acceptable Photo ID (unexpired or expired for one year or less):

  • North Carolina Driver's License
  • U.S. Passport/U.S. Passport Card
  • College/University IDs approved by NCSBE including UNC Chapel Hill, Duke University, Durham Tech, and NC Central University
  • North Carolina ID ("non-operator ID") from NC DMV
  • NC Voter Photo ID card from county board of elections
  • Charter school or state/local government employee ID approved by NCSBE
  • Driver's license/non-driver ID from another state, DC, or US territory (only if registered in NC within 90 days of election)
